Meiotic crossovers : insights from data analysis and modeling
Meiotic crossovers are the fodder of natural and artificial evolution, driving the shuffling of alleles within chromosomes. Dozens of genes are known to affect the formation of crossovers between homologs during meiosis. Most species have two pathways of crossover formation, one which is interfering, the other not. Crossover interference was first discovered in the Morgan lab a century ago and yet the underlying mechanisms still remain unknown. I will show how quantitative modeling has been used, what has been learned, and how the field could benefit from physical techniques and instrumentation.
